Psicologia e produzione letteraria in lingua araba: quali connessioni? Alcune riflessioni preliminari
(Psychology and literary production in Arabic: What connections? Some preliminary reflections)

This essay considers how psychology can be involved in investigation and translation of modern Arabic literature. Through a review of the works of scholars in both the fields of humanities and clinical psychology and/or psychoanalysis, this paper explores the possibility of finding similarities between clinicians and translators’ jobs and perspectives. In particular, the capability of “reading between the lines” will be outlined as it allows both professionals to pursue their task and clients to meet their expectations. As a case of study, we will present selected parts of a novel by Hind al-Ziyādī, al-Ṣamt. Skīzūfīrīniyā (The silence. Schizophrenia). Comments on some stylistic and technical remarks will be provided at the end of the paper. Finally, this paper wishes to inaugurate a branch of research on how to define the “personal signature” of each author, whose decision to write that particular story in that particular way should not be hidden and forgotten.
