Toni Maraini, la poesia di un “amore poliglotta” nell’abbraccio del Mediterraneo

(Toni Maraini, the poetry of a “polyglot love” in the embrace of the Mediterranean Sea)

in La rivista di Arablit, a. IV, n. 7-8, dicembre 2014, pp. 83-92.

For breadth of cultural horizons, knowledge of languages and the depth that characterizes her both as a writer and a person, Toni Maraini is one of the most interesting figures in contemporary Italian literature, and one who richly deserves acknowledgement as a completely transnational author. A long and varied intellectual journey between the horizons of her two Orients makes it difficult to pay justice to the honesty and rigor of her artistic and human vocation. Her cosmopolitan formation, almost unique in the Italian cultural scene, is her chief companion and in the end carries her to the Mediterranean basin. Experienced on other shores, the Mediterranean is embraced and cherished for its cultural koiné, and longed for as the utopia of true global citizenship.
