La traduzione come strumento ritrovato di rinnovamento. Una lettura del paratesto di Ta’rīḫ al-Masīḥ

Translation, as a practical and theoretical activity, facilitates a reciprocal exchange between cultures, enriching both the source and target systems. This exchange provides insights into fundamental aspects such as the cultural systems’ condition, the position of translation within it, the relationship between the Self and the Other, and the evolution of these dynamics over time. Translation plays a significant role in both the development and regression phases. Building on the theory of polysystem, this contribution aims to interpret the paratexts accompanying Faraḥ Anṭūn’s translations, in particular in Taʾrīḫ al-Masīḥ. The analysis of the paratext of this translation clarifies the practical aspects of the translation project and sheds light on the reasons behind the selection of work to be translated into Arabic and the intended function within the target Arab cultural system. The analysis highlights the importance of understanding translation as a means of cultural exchange and explores the role of translation in shaping and evolving cultural systems.
La traduzione, sia come attività pratica che teorica, consente uno scambio reciproco tra culture, arricchendo tanto il sistema di partenza quanto quello di arrivo. Le dinamiche di questo scambio rivelano aspetti fondamentali, tra cui la condizione dei sistemi culturali coinvolti, la posizione della traduzione al loro interno, la natura della relazione tra il Sé e l’Altro e l’evoluzione di queste interazioni nel tempo. Inoltre, la traduzione gioca un ruolo significativo nelle fasi di sviluppo e regressione dei sistemi culturali. Basandosi sulla teoria del polisistema, questo contributo si propone di interpretare i paratesti che accompagnano le traduzioni di Faraḥ Anṭūn, in particolare di Taʾrīḫ al-Masīḥ. L’analisi del paratesto di questa traduzione chiarisce, infatti, gli aspetti pratici del progetto traduttivo e spiega le motivazioni dietro la selezione dell’opera da tradurre in arabo e la funzione attesa all’interno del sistema culturale arabo di arrivo. L’analisi evidenzia l’importanza di comprendere la traduzione come strumento di scambio culturale ed esplora il ruolo della traduzione nella formazione e nell’evoluzione dei sistemi culturali.
