In 1956, during the Cold War, the Lebanese intellectual Mīḫā’īl Nu‘aymah travelled to the Soviet Union at the invitation of the Union of Soviet Writers. In the space of a month, he visited the cities of Prague, Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Poltava and Stalingrad. The impressions produced by the contact with the new Soviet reality became a source of inspiration for his work Āb‘ad min Mūskū wa min Wāšinṭun (Beyond Moscow and Washington), a philosophical essay with a strong autobiographical tone, in which the author discusses and reveals the limits of the capitalist and communist doctrines, as well as his personal connection with Russia that began in childhood during the Tsarist era and continued until his death.
