This issue of “La rivista di Arablit” is fully dedicated to the 1988 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ, and it contains some of the papers presented at the international conference “Tributo a Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ nel centenario della nascita”, held at Sapienza University of Rome on 5-6 December 2011 to celebrate the cen-tennial of the great Egyptian writer’s birth. The following article is the text of the introductory speech aimed at offering a brief account of the success that Maḥfūẓ’s books have had in Italy.
