The recent Arab Spring was anticipated by many contemporary writers who related human exasperation inside their societies through their works. As for Syria, Hayfāʼ Bīṭār’s voice stands out among others for her particular interest in social issues which inspired one of her best books, al-Sāqiṭah, a short story collection about nowadays Syrian men and women condemned to be victims of their own society.
