(The “Oedipus Complex” in Elsa Morante and Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ)

in La rivista di Arablit, a. II, n. 3, giugno 2012, pp. 100-110.

The relationship between mother and child is an extremely complex theme traced both in classical mythology and, through following reworking, in more recent fictional works. Ever since it appeared in Greek tradition, the Oedipus myth has been reworked several times in the history of human thought; and well-known interpretations of this myth have been offered by Nineteenth century psychoanalysis.  This article presents a comparative analysis of due novels belonging to two different cultures and dealing with the Oedipus complex: Aracoeli, published by the Italian authoress Elsa Morante, in 1982, and al-Sarāb (The Mirage), published by the Egyptian Nobel Laureate Naǧīb Maḥfūẓ, in 1948.
